Overview
Completed in 1935, Dock Bridge carries the Northeast Corridor across the Passaic River between Newark and Harrison, New Jersey. Built by the Pennsylvania Railroad as part of its modernization and electrification program, the bridge serves as the eastern gateway to Newark Penn Station.
Designed by consulting engineers Waddell & Hardesty, Dock Bridge is a massive vertical-lift railroad bridge with independently operated lift spans. The bridge was engineered to accommodate heavy railroad traffic while allowing vessels to navigate the Passaic River below. National Register documentation notes that the structure is unique because of its unusual double-lift configuration and its ability to handle multiple railroad tracks simultaneously.
Today, Amtrak, New Jersey Transit, and PATH trains cross Dock Bridge daily. Nearly a century after its completion, it remains one of the most distinctive railroad structures in New Jersey and a vital link on the nation’s busiest passenger rail corridor.
