Transports publics fribourgeois has ordered 13 four-car FLIRT Evo electric multiple-unit trains from Stadler as part of a modernization of its standard-gauge regional fleet.
The first train is expected to enter commercial service on the TPF network in December 2028, followed by another approximately every two months. The new trains will allow TPF to gradually retire its Domino fleet.
The order is valued at 117 million Swiss francs. TPF was able to use options and commercial terms negotiated by Swiss Federal Railways as part of a major procurement conducted in 2021 through a partnership between the two operators.
Each four-car FLIRT Evo will be 73.5 meters long, accommodate 369 passengers and provide 164 seats. The trains will have a maximum speed of 160 kilometers per hour, or about 99 mph, along with acceleration and braking characteristics intended for regional routes with frequent stops.
Wide doors are designed to reduce boarding times. The interiors will include multifunction spaces for bicycles, strollers and luggage, passenger information systems and electrical outlets.
The trains will also be fully accessible, with step-free boarding, level passage through much of the train, wheelchair spaces and accessible restrooms.
Stadler will build the trains for TPF’s standard-gauge network. The manufacturer is based in Bussnang in the Swiss canton of Thurgau.
Once the fleet transition is completed, TPF expects its standard-gauge fleet to consist of eight existing FLIRT trains and the 13 FLIRT Evo units. The operator also has 10 FLIRT trains used on the meter-gauge Montbovon-Palézieux route.
