The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority has received its first next-generation railcar as part of a $435 million investment to replace its aging fleet.
The new vehicle is a Siemens Model S200 light rail vehicle.
Officials said the railcars are designed with a focus on passenger comfort, accessibility and reliability. Each vehicle includes 52 easy-to-clean seats, additional standing room, four wheelchair areas, two bicycle racks and an advanced infotainment system.
Officials said the vehicles are also designed for Cleveland winters, with ice-cutting technology, a heated windshield and a modern operator cab with a dedicated heating, ventilation and air conditioning system and improved visibility.
Each railcar will undergo safety and commissioning tests at GCRTA’s Brookpark rail yard and on the agency’s rail system before entering passenger service. The new vehicles are expected to begin Red Line service in summer 2027, followed by Blue and Green Line service in summer 2028.
