FS Group Plans New European Connections, Trains and Technology

FS Group used InnoTrans 2026 to outline plans for new international rail service, new trains and technology aimed at improving operations and maintenance.

Trenitalia, working with Deutsche Bahn and ÖBB, plans to launch Frecciarossa service between Milan and Munich and between Rome and Munich in summer 2027. The initial schedule will include four services, with 10 planned by December 2028, including extensions to Naples and Berlin.

Trenitalia and Alstom also unveiled the Intercity 200, a new train capable of 200 kilometers per hour. It will have 403 seats, three spaces for passengers with reduced mobility and room for eight bicycles. Trenitalia plans to buy 38 of the trains as part of a roughly €500 million investment.

FS Group also showcased a virtual reality train simulator, automated freight car coupling technology, sensor-equipped freight cars and drones used to inspect infrastructure.

Rete Ferroviaria Italiana presented TINO, a prototype autonomous inspection vehicle designed to check high-speed rail lines before daily passenger service. The vehicle can operate autonomously or remotely and has a top speed of 200 kilometers per hour.
