New Jersey Assembly Committee Advances Bill to Offer Discounted NJ Transit Fares

The New Jersey Assembly Transportation and Independent Authorities Committee has advanced a measure to create two programs that would offer discounted fares and make transit more accessible to riders.

A2329, sponsored by Assemblyman Bill Moen, D-Camden/Gloucester, and Speaker Craig J. Coughlin, D-Middlesex, would create a two-pronged approach through the “NJpass Program” and the “GO NJ Transit Card Program.” By authorizing NJ Transit to partner directly with workforce development programs, higher education institutions, social service providers, and employers, the NJpass Program would enable bulk fare discounting specifically tailored to commuters in training and career placement pipelines.

Additionally, the GO NJ Transit Card Program would establish a modern fare-capping system to ensure individuals who use a transit card pay the lowest authorized fare for any travel period, without paying the full cost upfront. Together, these provisions aim to expand public transportation access and lower cost barriers for New Jersey residents.

Under this bill, NJ Transit would be required to submit reports to the Governor and the Legislature on the effectiveness of each program.
