Agreement Keeps Chicago-to-Indianapolis Hoosier State Alive

An Amtrak route between Chicago and Indianapolis will continue to see service seven days per week agreement between Amtrak, the Indiana Department of Transportation and Iowa Pacific Holdings.

The Hoosier State will operate four days per week between Chicago and Indianapolis. The new service began on Aug. 2, the state said.

Amtrak operates the Cardinal between Chicago and Washington via Indianapolis. Amtrak will operate the Hoosier State trains, the Journal Review reported.

One of the three Iowa Pacific passenger cars used on Hoosier State trains will be a dome lounge. For a limited time, passengers can sit in the dome car on a first-come, first-serve basis at no additional charge.

The state expects to pay roughly $300,000 a month to support the service, Indiana Public Media reported. Communities along the line are expecting to kick in an additional $21,000 per month.

State officials previously said they made the decision to cancel the Hoosier State in the wake of a Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) decision that requires the state to serve as a railroad.
