The nation’s largest railroad and its largest rail union announced an unprecedented agreement that both sides said guarantees job security for thousands of workers as Union Pacific pursues a merger with Norfolk Southern.

Union Pacific Corp. and Norfolk Southern Corp. are launching a new domestic intermodal service to deliver greater market reach and more efficient freight transportation options.

The U.S Department of Justice announced a settlement with Norfolk Southern Corp. and Norfolk Southern Railway Co. to resolve allegations that the Atlanta-based freight railroad delayed Amtrak passenger trains on Amtrak’s Crescent Route in violation of federal law.
