Greenwood Avenue Street Railway Company

Overview

The Greenwood Avenue Street Railway Company was organized in 1888 to build a second streetcar line in Clarksville, running from Madison Street along Greenwood Avenue toward Greenwood Cemetery and the Cumberland River. Many of its incorporators had also been involved with the original Clarksville Street Railway. Construction began in 1890 amid disputes over street improvements and right-of-way issues, but the company pressed forward and operated its first excursion in September 1890. Although the inaugural trips attracted considerable public attention, the new line experienced operational difficulties, including frequent derailments during its opening runs.

The company soon emerged as the principal competitor to the Clarksville Street Railway. After a brief period of cooperation and shared operations, the Greenwood Avenue Street Railway Company purchased the Clarksville Street Railway in October 1891, creating a unified street railway system for the city. The acquisition marked an important step in the development of public transportation in Clarksville and paved the way for later modernization and electrification of the city’s streetcar network.
