Overview
The Muscogee Railroad was incorporated in 1845 to build a railroad westward from Columbus, Georgia, with the goal of connecting to the South Western Rail Road Company at Fort Valley. Little progress was made until 1847, when the prospect of a competing railroad prompted the city of Columbus to renew its support and subscribe an additional $150,000 to the company’s stock.
Construction advanced over the following years, but available funding was insufficient to complete the line to Fort Valley. The South Western Rail Road eventually assumed responsibility for the eastern portion of the route, built westward to meet the Muscogee Railroad, and later absorbed the entire railroad into its system.
