Overview
On Feb. 15, 1929, Southern Ohio Public Service Co. discontinued interurban railway service between Newark and Zanesville, Ohio. The final car from Newark reached Zanesville around midnight, ending approximately 25 years of electric railway operation between the two cities.
Interurban service between Newark and Columbus previously ended Jan. 16, 1929. The Times Recorder of Zanesville reported that the company’s cars and equipment would be sold as junk.
The company attributed the end of service to the rise of automobiles and motor buses and the declining financial returns from interurban operations. Southern Ohio Public Service planned to improve its motor bus service to replace the abandoned rail route.
