Overview
On Nov. 6, 1908, New Zealand’s North Island Main Trunk Railway was completed following more than two decades of work. The line created a continuous rail link between Auckland and Wellington and stands as one of the defining moments in New Zealand transportation history.
During a ceremony, Prime Minister Sir Joseph Ward drove a polished silver spike crafted by George Thomas White at Manganuioteao, between Waimarino (National Park) and Ohakune, to mark the line’s completion.
