Overview
On May 10, 1888, the Newark & Granville Electric Street Railway was incorporated to build an electric railway linking Newark and Granville in Licking County, Ohio. Organized by local businessmen and investors, the company sought to provide a faster and more reliable alternative to horse-drawn transportation and stage routes that connected the two communities.
The project adopted electric traction technology at a time when electric railway operation remained in its infancy, making the undertaking one of the most ambitious transportation ventures in Ohio. Construction began soon afterward, and the line would become one of the earliest electric railways in the nation to connect separate municipalities.
