Overview
On May 12, 1837, engineers began surveying the state-owned Western & Atlantic Railroad. Col. Stephen Harriman Long oversaw the survey work, which established the railroad’s general alignment through north Georgia and identified the location of its southern terminus.
A settlement developed around that terminus, initially known as Terminus and later Atlanta.
