Biography
Ira Eugene Fort (September 11, 1845-June 5, 1893) was a Confederate veteran and later an employee of the Western & Atlantic Railroad. Born in Houston County, Georgia, Fort enlisted in the Confederate army at age sixteen as a member of the Nelson Rangers of Albany.
During the Civil War, the unit served as a bodyguard for Generals Kirby Smith and Stephen D. Lee. After the war, Fort was engaged in cotton planting in southwest Georgia before moving to Atlanta. There, he worked for the Western & Atlantic Railroad until declining health forced his retirement.
Fort died in Atlanta on June 5, 1893, after several years of illness and was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon.
