ABINGDON, Va. – Though trains still pass through this Virginia community, the town is perhaps best known for a walking trail where the trains no longer run.The Virginia Creeper Trail hasn’t seen train activity since 1956, but today the former rail line is a walking trail. Dating to the 1890s, the line once connected Abingdon and other nearby cities and was served by the Norfolk & Western Railroad.
The railroad abandoned the line in 1974.
