While many Kiwis are looking forward to a well-earned summer break, KiwiRail teams are ramping up in preparation for their busiest Christmas closure period to date.
The Auckland rail network will close from Dec. 27 to Jan. 27, 2025, reopening on Jan. 28. Crews will carry out critical upgrades to prepare for the faster, more frequent train services the City Rail Link will bring.
Some areas will be impacted slightly longer.
During this year’s extended closure period, more than 1,350 KiwiRail staff and contractors will work across 110 sites on the Auckland metro network. Officials said this will allow them to make significant progress on key upgrade projects and carry out work to raise the rail network’s standard.
Network-wide shutdowns allow KiwiRail to blitz the network most effectively and efficiently. Officials said they provide teams with uninterrupted access and safely deliver intensive work that is only possible when no trains run.
