New Zealand Police: Person Killed in Invercargill Train Incident

A pedestrian died after they were struck by a freight train in Invercargill, New Zealand.

Police responded to the scene around 5:20 p.m., where the person was found deceased. According to reports, the person was killed at the Ness Street crossing, which included a “pedestrian maze and signage.”

The KiwiRail train was carrying coal.

A scene examination has been conducted, and Police and KiwiRail are working to clear the scene. Police are working to identify the person killed and said that inquiries remain ongoing.

It marks the second pedestrian fatality in New Zealand in a week. Last week, a 13-year-old student was struck and killed by a train near Matamata College.
