The Southerner Returns: Dunedin Railways and Great Journeys New Zealand Celebrate Success of Special Rail Experience

Dunedin Railways is celebrating the phenomenal public response to The Southerner’s highly anticipated return this October, with its three-day Christchurch to Dunedin rail package, including the Taieri Gorge, nearly sold out.

The overwhelming demand underscores the enduring appeal of this iconic rail journey, made possible through a partnership with Great Journeys New Zealand. While this combined package is nearly sold out, individual tickets for the Taieri Gorge train itself remain available on Oct. 25, 26, and 27, giving more people the chance to experience part of this historic event.

Originally launched in 1970, The Southerner connected Christchurch and Invercargill for over 30 years, carrying generations of travelers until its final service in 2002. For three days only — Oct. 25, 26 and 27 — Great Journeys New Zealand is reviving this nostalgic experience, with a modified route finishing in Dunedin due to platform safety restrictions in Invercargill.

Departing from Christchurch, passengers will travel south along the rugged Otago coastline.

As the train passes through Timaru and Oamaru, guests will enjoy views of Caroline Bay, striking limestone architecture and glimpse the famous penguin colonies, all while soaking in breathtaking coastal scenery. Near the journey’s end, passengers can take in sweeping vistas of Otago Harbour before arriving at the grand Dunedin Railway Station, right in the heart of New Zealand’s “Edinburgh of the South.”

A highlight of this special journey is a ride aboard Dunedin Railways’ world-renowned Taieri Gorge line, a spectacular route only accessible by rail and celebrated for its dramatic viaducts, historic tunnels, and remote, untouched landscapes. While the combined Christchurch-to-Dunedin package is nearly sold out, travelers can still secure tickets for the Taieri Gorge experience on Oct. 25, 26, and 27, ensuring they don’t miss out on this legendary rail adventure.

“There’s something special about seeing The Southerner back on the tracks,” Dunedin Railways General Manager Rebekah Jenkins said. “The overwhelming interest in this partnership package shows how meaningful these journeys are to New Zealanders. Working with Great Journeys New Zealand is an important step forward, demonstrating what’s possible when we collaborate to protect and promote our rail heritage for future generations.

“This is more than just a train ride,” Jenkins added. “It’s an opportunity to slow down, enjoy the journey, and reconnect with the magic of rail travel. We’re proud to be part of it — and thrilled to see the excitement it has created.”

The strong response to The Southerner demonstrates how heritage rail experiences can support regional tourism, benefiting accommodations, hospitality, and attractions across the South Island. Travelers interested in experiencing the world-famous Taieri Gorge Railway during these dates are encouraged to book soon, as limited seats remain.
