LONDON — Britain’s Rail Accident Investigation Branch said it has opened an investigation into a fatal accident in which a young person was struck by a train while crossing the railway at Bottesford footpath crossing in Leicestershire.
RAIB said the incident happened at about noon on Jan. 25, at the pedestrian crossing near Bottesford station. The agency said the Bottesford footpath crossing provides a walking route between two residential areas and is equipped with gates on either side of the railway, along with signage instructing users how to cross.
RAIB said its investigation will establish the sequence of events leading to the accident and will examine factors that may have influenced the decisions and actions of those involved. Investigators will also consider any previous incidents at the crossing, how risk is managed at the site, Network Rail’s broader approach to assessing and mitigating risk at footpath crossings, and any relevant underlying factors.
RAIB said its investigation is independent of any inquiry by the railway industry or the industry’s regulator, the Office of Rail and Road. The agency said it will publish its findings, including any safety recommendations, at the conclusion of the investigation.
