DeFeo Debuts New Song About 1886 Gauge Change

SMYRNA, Georgia — Todd DeFeo, an award-winning journalist who publishes Railfanning.org and is also a singer/songwriter, debuted a new song during a concert Saturday in the Atlanta suburb of Smyrna.

“Three Inches at a Time” is based on DeFeo’s most recent book, “Changing the Gauge on the Western & Atlantic Railroad,” which chronicles the 1886 gauge change on the state-owned line between Atlanta and Chattanooga, Tennessee. DeFeo performed the song alongside other original railroad-theme songs, including “Talking MCL,” “Off the Rails,” and “Down in the Creek,” which chronicles the 1869 disaster at Budds Creek in Tennessee.

DeFeo, a noted lecturer, presented a talk on the topic in Smyrna in early May.
