ATLANTA — The Georgia Department of Transportation is seeking public input on a study examining the potential for passenger rail service between Atlanta and Savannah.

The public comment period for the Atlanta-Savannah Intercity Passenger Rail Project runs through Aug. 6, 2026. GDOT is asking travelers to share feedback on their travel preferences as the agency evaluates possible service options.

The study, which follows similar examinations in years past, will examine the benefits and costs of passenger rail service between Atlanta and Savannah, identify and narrow down potential service alternatives, and focus on financially feasible and practical implementation options. The study area includes Atlanta, Athens, Statesboro, Milledgeville, Macon, Augusta and Savannah.

The project received $10 million in funding, including $8 million in federal Congressional Directed Spending and a $2 million state match from GDOT’s rail budget. The funding is administered by the Federal Railroad Administration. GDOT said no additional funding has been identified to move the project forward after completion of the Service Development Plan.

The federal grant was awarded in 2023, and work began with FRA coordination, work plan development, project kickoff and preliminary purpose and need development. In 2025, the study moved into market analysis, route identification, stakeholder coordination, public surveys and early identification of route options.

Work continues in 2026 with detailed technical analysis, partner coordination and review of potential alternatives. GDOT said additional information will be shared with the public as the study advances.
