Classic City Street Railway

Overview

The Classic City Street Railway was the first passenger streetcar operator in Athens, Georgia. Incorporated in September 1885, the company was organized by Texas railroad promoter George M. Snodgrass and opened service on December 24, 1885. The initial line ran through downtown Athens and west along Milledge Avenue, with mule-drawn streetcars providing passenger service.

Joseph Harwell “J.H.” Dorsey later leased and then purchased the railway, overseeing efforts to expand the route. Despite strong public interest and plans for additional extensions, the company struggled financially. Operations ceased in January 1889, and the railway was sold at a sheriff’s sale in July of that year. The property passed to new owners, who reorganized it as the Athens Railway Company, which eventually electrified the system and expanded the network.
