First Streetcar Service Begins in Athens, Georgia

Overview

Streetcar service began in Athens on Dec. 24, 1885, when the Classic City Street Railway inaugurated operations. The new mule-drawn line marked the beginning of organized urban transit in the city and connected downtown Athens with developing residential areas.

The arrival of streetcar service represented a major transportation milestone for the Classic City. Over the following 45 years, streetcars would help shape Athens’ growth, carrying residents, students, shoppers, and visitors across the city.
