Overview
Workers laid the first iron rail on the Monroe Railroad in Georgia in October 1838, marking an important step toward completing the new line between Macon and Forsyth. The railroad had been chartered on Dec. 23, 1833, and later became known as the Monroe Railroad and Banking Company.
A report in The Daily Georgian said the wooden roadbed was nearly complete and that crews expected to lay the remaining iron rapidly. The railroad expected to complete the track within about three weeks. A locomotive and cars were also reportedly nearby and ready to enter service as soon as the line could accommodate them.
