Overview
On Dec. 28, 1889, the Newark & Granville Electric Street Railway began operating electric cars over its newly constructed line between Newark, Ohio, and a point near Granville, Ohio. The route was built using the Sprague system of electric traction, which was then at the forefront of railway technology.
Although construction was not yet fully complete into downtown Granville, the opening demonstrated the practicality of electric transportation between communities. Contemporary observers viewed the project as a significant advancement in regional travel, reducing travel times while providing more dependable service than earlier transportation options.
