End of Newark-Granville, Ohio, Interurban Service

Overview

On March 10, 1923, the last interurban car operated between Newark and Granville, Ohio, ending more than three decades of continuous service. The closure marked the end of one of America’s earliest electric interurban railways and reflected the broader decline of the interurban industry.

Increasing competition from automobiles, improved highways, and motor buses had steadily eroded passenger traffic and revenue. Although the route had once served as a pioneering example of electric transportation and later formed part of the extensive Ohio Electric system, changing transportation patterns ultimately made continued operation impractical.
