The American Locomotive Company (ALCO) produced 131 Century 420 (C420) diesel-electric locomotives between June 1963 and August 1968.

ALCO built the four-axle, 2,000-horsepower locomotive as part of its Century line of locomotives. The C420 was to replace the RS-32, of which 35 were produced between June 1961 and June 1962.

A number of railroads employed the C420, incliding the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, the Norfolk & Western Railroad and the Tennessee Central Railway.
