Congress and federal authorities have expressed their interest in some level of automatic train control (ATC) for more than a century.

The nation’s railroads have made significant strides implementing Positive Train Control (PTC), a former Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) administrator says.

So-called “safety-sensitive” railroad personnel should be screened for obstructive sleep apnea, and technology such as positive train control should be used in terminal stations to improve the safety of operations, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said in a new ruling.
