Coulbourn Brothers No. 4

Glover Machine Works No. 81421 is a 2-6-0 narrow-gauge steam locomotive built in 1916 by Glover Machine Works in Marietta, Georgia, for Coulbourn Brothers of Suffolk, Virginia.

Founded in 1900, the company operated under the Coulbourn Brothers name until 1932, when it became Coulbourn Lumber Co. The locomotive reportedly cost $3,100 and entered service the next year as Coulbourn Brothers No. 4, working the firm’s industrial operations.

Built to a 36-inch gauge, the engine featured 8-by-14-inch cylinders, a compact specification typical of small logging and industrial lines that needed power to handle tight curves and lighter track. In 1923, after Coulbourn Brothers failed to make payment, the locomotive was returned to Glover, where it remained for decades.

In 1991, it left the builder’s custody, and in 1992, it was placed on public display in Marietta, preserving a rare local example of Glover’s narrow-gauge output.
