The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority will replace its heavy rail fleet over the next several years with 224 railcars (56 four-car train sets) purchased from Stadler in 2019 for $646 million. Stadler built the new railcar bodies in Hungary and in December 2022 were sent to Salt Lake City to be outfitted before returning to Atlanta. MARTA expects to place them in service in 2025.
According to MARTA, the new state-of-the-art railcars feature open gangway designs, upgraded lighting and seating, digital displays, charging stations, and improved safety measures. The agency said the cars symbolize its commitment to modernization and innovation, with the first batch arriving for testing and planned deployment in 2025.
