Makatote Viaduct

(Railfanning.org Library)

The Makatote Viaduct (Bridge 179) carries the North Island Main Trunk over the Makatote River in New Zealand.

It is located 335.7 km (208.6 mi) from Wellington, at the base of Ruapehu, in northern Manawatū-Whanganui (central North Island), between Erua and Pokaka. The viaduct, designed by Peter Seton Hay, was constructed between 1905 and 1908 for the Public Works Department. It was later handed over to the New Zealand Railways Department in 1909.

At its construction, it was the tallest viaduct in New Zealand. It currently holds the position of the third tallest, with taller viaducts being the 1981 North Rangitikei at 81 meters (266 ft) further south on the NIMT and the 1937 Mohaka viaduct at 95 meters (312 ft) on the Gisborne line.
