In 1879, the Georgia General Assembly established the Railroad Commission of Georgia to regulate railroad passenger and freight rates, services and operations.
As Georgia’s population grew and industry expanded, the commission also needed to grow. The Legislature, therefore, conferred additional regulatory responsibilities on the commission. Over the next several years, the commission saw regulatory expansion and deregulation periods.
In 1922, the Legislature changed the Railroad Commission’s name to the Georgia Public Service Commission to reflect the increasing services and utilities under its jurisdiction.
