Overview
The Classic City Street Railway was incorporated on Sept. 19, 1885, under the leadership of railroad promoter George M. Snodgrass and a group of local investors. The company was organized to construct and operate Athens’ first practical street railway system.
The railway opened service later that year and introduced a new era of local transportation. Although the company struggled financially and lasted only a few years, it laid the foundation for all subsequent street railway operations in Athens.
