First Electric Streetcar Operates in Clarksville, Tennessee

Overview

On Aug. 22, 1896, the first electric streetcar operated in Clarksville, replacing the city’s earlier mule-powered system. The Electric Street Railway of Clarksville opened the new service to the public the following day and carried more than 1,200 passengers. The company eventually operated about 5.5 miles of track.
