Overview
The Memphis, Clarksville & Louisville Railroad was chartered by the Tennessee General Assembly on Jan. 28, 1852. The new company was organized to help connect western Tennessee and Kentucky as part of a broader effort to expand rail transportation across the region.
Although its title suggested a direct route linking Memphis, Clarksville and Louisville, the railroad was envisioned as a connecting link that would rely on partnerships with other railroads to complete the route between the Ohio and Mississippi river valleys. Promoters believed the railroad would strengthen Clarksville’s position as a commercial center by providing merchants and tobacco growers with faster transportation than river travel alone.
