Biography
George Benton Faxon (May 13, 1838-March 13, 1908) was a Clarksville railroad official whose career connected the city’s first railroad era with later efforts to build a competing line north toward Princeton, Kentucky.
After the Civil War, Faxon was appointed treasurer of the Memphis, Clarksville & Louisville Railroad in November 1865, as the company worked to restore its damaged line and resume service. In May 1866, when George T. Lewis became president, Faxon continued as treasurer during one of the railroad’s most difficult financial periods.
Faxon later became involved with renewed efforts to build another railroad out of Clarksville. By 1887, Faxon was listed as auditor and assistant superintendent for the Indiana, Alabama & Texas Railroad, showing his continued role in Clarksville-area railroad administration.
