George Prince

Biography

George Prince (d. July 6, 1862) was a fireman on the Western & Atlantic Railroad during the Civil War. He was serving aboard the Excel when it collided with the President near Johnson’s Station, outside Chattanooga. Contemporary newspaper accounts reported that Prince and engineer Frank Cannon were killed in the crash, along with several Confederate soldiers traveling on the train. The accident was one of the deadliest wartime wrecks on the Western & Atlantic Railroad and underscored the hazards faced by railroad workers operating under the demands of Civil War transportation.
