Overview
The current Clarksville depot dates to 1881, when the Louisville & Nashville Railroad selected a site near Bradley’s Brickyard for a new passenger station. The decision followed years of debate over the location of the city’s railroad facilities, with business leaders, railroad officials, and residents advocating for competing sites. Construction began in September 1881, and the new frame depot opened to railroad traffic on March 15, 1882. Built to replace an earlier post-Civil War passenger station, the depot became Clarksville’s principal passenger rail gateway during the city’s tobacco-boom era. Although damaged by fire in 1901, the structure was rebuilt and modernized, continuing to serve passengers until Louisville & Nashville ended passenger service through Clarksville in 1968. The city acquired the depot in 1982, preserving one of the community’s most significant railroad landmarks.
