Overview
In December 1901, Alexander Cassatt, president of the Pennsylvania Railroad, announced a bold plan to build a tunnel beneath the North River (Hudson River). It would allow the railroad to accomplish a long-standing goal to run its trains into the city. In conjunction with the tunnel, the railroad announced plans to build a massive new station in the heart of Manhattan. The railroad acquired property for the station, simply named Pennsylvania Station.
