Government officials say new legislation will expand and improve anti-terrorist security programs for passenger railroad and freight rail systems. The bill was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on June 17.

Citing the vital importance of Amtrak to the nation’s economy and quality of life, a large delegation of East Coast business leaders today introduced a new coalition to advocate for increased federal investment in the aging passenger rail system.

Amtrak President and Chief Executive Officer David L. Gunn has sent the railroad’s FY ’05 federal grant request of $1.798 billion to Congress.
