The National Conference of Firemen and Oilers and Union Pacific Railroad have reached an agreement that will ensure jobs for hundreds of railroaders as Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern pursue the creation of what the railroads said would be America’s first coast-to-coast railroad.

Union Pacific Corp. and Norfolk Southern Corp. today announced an agreement to create America’s first transcontinental railroad.

Union Pacific agreed to acquire Norfolk Southern in a deal valued at $85 billion, according to reports.
