N.J. Transit Will Not Meet PTC Deadline

N.J. Transit will not meet the Dec. 31, 2018, deadline to install Positive Train Control (PTC), News 4 New York reported.

As of March 31, only 8 percent of trains had PTC equipment installed, and no PTC work on the system’s tracks has been completed, the station reported.

Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao previously said the federal government expects railroads to implement positive train control (PTC) systems by the Congressionally mandated Dec. 31 deadline,

Chao sent a letter to the nation’s Class I railroads, intercity passenger railroads and state and local transit authorities. In it, she stressed the urgency and importance of safe operations.

BNSF recently said it has implemented Positive Train Control (PTC) over several BNSF-owned subdivisions.
