CN plans to invest millions in states across the country as part of its 2025 capital investment program.

Officials said the projects should help ensure the safe movement of goods and support long-term sustainable growth across CN’s network.

The company plans to invest approximately $170 million in Illinois, where it has approximately 1,667 employees and operates 1,256 route miles of track, supporting track maintenance and strategic infrastructure initiatives in the state. This includes investments towards the construction of the Chicago Logistics Hub and projects to upgrade technology and training facilities at CN’s Homewood Campus, as well as network improvements.

“We believe that investing in our network is about building for the future,” Tracy Robinson, president and Chief Executive Officer of CN, said.

“Our continued infrastructure investment in Illinois will help strengthen the resiliency and efficiency of our network across the state,” Robinson added. “Our focus remains on providing exceptional service to our customers and supply chain partners, supporting strong economic growth for North America and across communities where we operate.”

In Mississippi, where it has roughly 497 employees and operates 575 route miles, CN plans to invest approximately $75 million, while it plans to invest roughly $20 million in Indiana, where the railroad has about 419 employees and operates 102 route miles.

In Tennessee, where it has approximately 655 employees and 161 route miles, CN plans to spend $30 million.

“The Tennessee Department of Transportation is excited about CN’s investments in Tennessee,” Dan Pallme, assistant bureau chief for the Tennessee Department of Transportation’s Planning Bureau, said.

“The approximately $30 million will increase the entire system’s fluidity as Tennessee continues to grow, connecting CN with its customers in Tennessee and beyond,” Pallme added. “The investment will support TDOT’s vision of providing a safe and reliable transportation system for people, goods, and services, supporting Tennessee’s economic prosperity.”

In 2024, CN invested around $36 million in Tennessee for track maintenance and key infrastructure initiatives.
