Avanti West Coast Train Derails Near Shap; No Serious Injuries Reported

An Avanti West Coast train derailed near Shap, Cumbria, at about 6:15 a.m. local time on Nov. 3, with officials reporting no serious injuries.

British Transport Police said four people were treated at the scene by ambulance crews and discharged. All 85 passengers were safely escorted from the train.

The front carriage left the tracks but remained upright, according to initial reports. Emergency services have stood down from the site.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch will attend to determine the circumstances of the derailment.

“I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our partner emergency services and Cumbria Police who responded swiftly throughout,” Chief Superintendent Sandra England said in a release.
