CSX Transportation wants federal approval to discontinue common-carrier service along a more than 11.1-mile section of tracks in Oswego and Onondaga counties, New York.
The railroad has filed a verified notice of exemption with the Surface Transportation Board. The segment is part of its Albany Division, Baldwinsville Subdivision, extending from milepost QCB 11 to QCB 22.12.
According to a posting in the Federal Register, CSX reports that no local freight has operated on the line in the past two years, and all overhead traffic can be rerouted via alternative lines. The railroad also states there are no outstanding complaints about the cessation of service and that all required public and agency notifications have been issued.
If no one offers to subsidize continued rail service, the authority to discontinue service takes effect on Jan. 14, 2026. Key deadlines are: Dec. 24 for petitions to stay, excluding those involving environmental issues; Dec. 26 for formal notices of intent to submit an offer of financial assistance; and Jan. 5 for petitions for reconsideration.
Discontinuance would relieve CSX of its obligation to serve shippers on the affected segment. However, it does not independently authorize track removal.
The feds said that standard labor protections will apply to any employees impacted by the discontinuance.
