Democratic New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill pushed back Monday after reports suggested NJ Transit could charge riders more than $100 for round-trip train tickets between New York Penn Station and the Meadowlands during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In a Facebook post, Sherrill said her administration inherited an agreement that does not require FIFA to contribute toward transportation costs for the tournament, even as event-day parking at MetLife Stadium would be eliminated except for premium parking priced at more than $200 per space.

Sherrill argued that the arrangement leaves NJ Transit responsible for moving roughly four times the typical crowd for major events at the East Rutherford venue and said the agency faces an estimated $48 million cost to meet the World Cup surge.

New York-to-Meadowlands rail service on event days has typically been priced at $12.90 round trip. Reports of possible triple-digit fares during the World Cup would represent a sharp increase from that baseline.

Sherrill said New Jersey taxpayers should not be left to cover the cost of transportation operations while FIFA profits from the tournament, which she said could generate $11 billion.
