New Amtrak Cascades Trainset Enters Final Testing in Pacific Northwest

SEATTLE — The first new Amtrak Airo trainset for Amtrak Cascades has arrived in Seattle, marking a major step toward introducing the next generation of passenger trains in the Pacific Northwest later this year.

The trainset is the first of eight planned for the Cascades route and part of a broader national rollout of 83 Airo trainsets. Amtrak said the new equipment is designed to improve comfort, reliability and accessibility while offering regionally inspired design, modern amenities and local food and beverage options.

Before entering service, the trainset must complete a multi-stage testing and training process. Initial testing began at a dedicated test track in Pueblo, Colorado, where core systems were validated. The train was then tested on active tracks on the Northeast Corridor, where Amtrak owns and manages the railroad.

Now in the Pacific Northwest, the trainset will undergo final testing, staff training, route testing and practice runs on the Amtrak Cascades corridor before carrying passengers.

Amtrak said the new trains are part of the railroad’s largest fleet modernization effort. The Airo equipment is expected to debut first on Amtrak Cascades before expanding to the Northeast Regional and other short- and medium-distance routes in the coming years.

The arrival of the first trainset in Seattle brings the Cascades program closer to launch and gives the region its first look at the equipment intended to shape passenger service across the corridor.
