Storm Boelo Disrupts Rail Service Across Northwest England

Rail passengers face major disruptions across northwest England on Sunday, Oct. 25, as heavy rain and strong winds from Storm Boelo cause flooding and damage to railway infrastructure.

Torrential rain has flooded tracks, while strong winds have brought down overhead power lines in several locations. Train services are expected to face delays, schedule changes and cancellations throughout much of the day.

Network Rail is advising passengers to check before traveling through the region. Some operators have suspended service entirely, while others are urging passengers to travel only if necessary.

Passengers can also check service updates from Avanti West Coast, TransPennine Express and Northern.

Railway engineers worked overnight to inspect affected routes, clear fallen trees and debris, address flooding and assess damage to overhead power lines. Temporary speed restrictions have been introduced where necessary to maintain safe operations.

Chris Wright, Network Rail’s northwest route director, said crews are working to assess damage, clear debris and reopen routes as quickly as possible. However, continuing severe weather could cause further disruptions.

Storm Boelo has brought widespread wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph to northern Britain.

The severe weather is also affecting roads, power supplies and other infrastructure. The Met Office has warned of possible road closures, longer travel times, power outages and damage to buildings and trees.

Rail operators expect additional cancellations and last-minute schedule changes as conditions develop.
