Amfleet is a fleet of single-level intercity passenger cars for railroads.

The Budd Company built these cars for Amtrak in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Amfleet’s design is based on Budd’s earlier Metroliner electric multiple unit.

Initially, Amtrak ordered 57 cars in 1973 to supplement the Metroliners on the Northeast Corridor. Later, the order increased to 642 cars, enough to reequip Northeast Corridor services and other routes around the United States.

The first 492 cars, Amfleet I, were designed for short-distance service and completed between 1975 and 1977. The second order of 150 cars, known as Amfleet II, was designed for long-distance service and completed between 1980 and 1983.

These were Budd’s last intercity passenger cars.
