Waiting for a Flight and Exploring Detroit’s ExpressTram

ROMULUS, Michigan — Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport’s ExpressTram is unique among airport people movers.

The driverless system transports passengers in Concourse A of the Edward H. McNamara Terminal, previously known as the Northwest WorldGateway. The ExpressTram began operations on Feb. 24, 2002, the same day the terminal opened.

Concourse A is the world’s second-longest airport concourse.

The system uses two cable-driven trams that ride upon an air cushion, similar to a hovercraft, traveling along a guideway. It is said to be the first airport people mover to operate inside a terminal building and not outside or in a tunnel.

Is it time to revisit the conversation of making airport shuttle fanning a subgenre of railfanning?
